The future’s so bright, I decided to shade!

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Today’s comic is the first to display a bit of shading. It’s not much but I’ve found that a little shading goes a long way to add depth and character to illustrations.

Adding small touches like this is strange though. Some people like no shading at all. Sometimes it messes with people’s imaginations. For instance, if a character’s hair is shading in as black and the reader has always envisioned the hair as blonde, it could make for mixed feelings.

Brad Guiger at Evil, Inc. stated in a Webcomics Weekly Podcast  that, when he added color to his comic, some fans clamored. We would think that adding color or shading or whatever adds to the work but, in some people’s eyes, it may not always be true. I personally like the color in Evil, Inc. – it’s masterfully done and adds a completely new dimension.

So, is color in the future for Perk at Work? Well, color is definitely in the past. Check out some of the old Sunday comics to see the characters in full color!
