Being local is going global
Sunday, July 12th, 2009I’ve been getting more and more excited about local economies. Just yesterday a couple of local artists/web designers were discussing the subject.
To put this in perspective, these local artists/web designers live in Las Cruces, NM – a beautiful town of modest size and growing. At first glance, one might think there is not much opportunity in such a locale. But, the more we discussed it, the more excited we got about projects utilizing local talent. Also we had to admit that, just because we don’t know all the artists in this town, does not mean they aren’t out there.

We also discussed local economies in general. In Las Cruces, there are many folks who try to eat as locally as possible. I could go on and on about the absolutely wonderful food we have here and the top-rate Farmers Market, but one needs to visit to truly understand.
In any case, we talked about how, with the internet we can work with people all over the world but why? If there’s talent right down the street, why not work with that guy. It keeps money here and builds actual, physical network ties.
Books and resources about a movement toward local economies abound. And I think that’s a good thing. But I also think it’s great to be able to share things with people all over the world. We do live in a great day and age!
