Avatar: James Cameron conquered the movies

Well, it was bound to happen. James Cameron finally conquered the movies with Avatar. I just stepped out of the movie theater and I cannot compare it to anything I’ve ever seen. I seldom watch movies any more and, after this one, I kind of feel as if I don’t need to watch any more. Such bittersweetness.

Is it wrong to be attracted to large, blue, female aliens?

Avatar has everything: great story, astonishing special effects, 3D… Three hours flew by and a big part of me would have stayed to watch more. When I say “more” I mean I would sit and watch a reality show set in his made-up world about nothing in particular. Yes, I’d just sit there and watch the trivial interactions of these alien creatures in their beautiful world. The movie makes the viewer want to abandon all reality to become an Avatar. Is this a good thing or not. Who knows?

In any case, after taking in the film, a thought crossed my mind: what if this is it? Will this movie be the pinnacle of cinematic accomplishment? Don’t laugh, I seriously thought this. Part of me thinks that future movie makers may just see Avatar and say, “Oh, well. No sense in trying to one up this. Let’s go back to an agrarian lifestyle.” Slowly we’ll stop going to sub-par movies and take up our hoes and farm by day and sit on the porch at night and talk about the good ol’ days when movies used to excite us.

The funny thing about the film is the irony. I’m not the first to point out that the storyline revolves around technology invading nature while the movie itself employs state-of-the-art technology to produce and distribute it and project it in glorious 3D viewed through plastic glasses. Uh-oh, now I’m getting all tree hugger on you. But that’s ok since Cameron is promoting it, right?

So will Avatar fan the flames of the green movement (or blue in this case)? I can’t say. But I can say that it’s going to take a lot more than mere special effects to deliver a better product than Avatar. Also I doubt I’ll be spending as much time in the movie theater with this new mind set. Perhaps I will take up the farming. As they say, “Why go out for a good time when you’ve got a hoe at home?”

Avatar. See it!
