Sam as he ever was

As I finish up my dream internship with MAD, I have to say a little something more about Sam Viviano.

Anyone familiar with MAD knows Sam Viviano’s work. He has a crisp, dynamic style with all sorts of intricate backgrounds and detail. And his caricatures are always spot on. Sam doesn’t let us down. I think that’s part of his nature.

I’ve had a great time working with Sam and he’s given me some invaluable feedback and great advice, not to mention some great stories. People talk about not meeting your heroes but Sam (in true fashion) did not let me down. He’s a great guy.

Recently we took some pics together. After a talk, I went back to the desk I was working at and just drew Sam from memory. I gave him my drawing of him and he tacked it on his cork board – a board that has all sorts of great drawings of him from his admirers. I am honored. Here’s how he accepted it:

Sam Viviano letting me know what he really thinks of my "artwork". Ha!

Thank you Sam for your talks, your direction, your advice, and your friendship. You’re still a hero of mine!
