Combat Drawing

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

There’s this great place in town called Mikey’s Place – warehouse retrofitted as an art/dance studio. Tonight they had a function (for lack of a better term) for artists of all sorts.

Artist note: The other night I ventured into a local Chamber of Commerce meeting to try to rub elbows. I felt like a fish out of water. This artists thing felt more natural.

In any case, some of the artists were participating in a “Combat Drawing” session. Basically they had to draw images fighting other images according to random card selections. These artists were having fun with it. I couldn’t help but think how challenging this must be, drawing random images in front of a crowd. But it’s all part of the art. Glad I got to witness it.

The guy on the right had a zombie stabbing another person. Though the image was well drawn, spectators argued whether a zombie would wield a knife or not. Personally, I felt zombies are purists in that their weapon of choice is teeth.
