RSS, PHP, and U!

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

I recently received a request to somehow embed Perk at Work into a social network profile – so that it would update daily automatically. Sounds interesting. I would like to do it but I have no idea where to begin.

I’m guessing there has to be some way of linking the RSS feed into the profile page. Is there a way to enter your own code on the profile? Is there a window widget of sorts for such a display?

Has anyone out there done anything like this? Thanks!

Going You Tubular

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

My buddy  J. (www.doodleloo.com) and I made our very first You Tube video last night. It has nothing to do with Perk at Work but I though some folks might get a kick out of it. Check it out!

Twitter’s empty nest

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Twitter’s all over. It seems as though anybody who’s anybody is tweeting. I, as always, am behind the curve. I just don’t get it.

I was listening to a podcast on startupbizcast.com and the host mentioned Twitter as a social marketing tool. I understand that it can be powerful and that lots of people are doing it but that’s exactly what escapes me: the more people are doing it, doesn’t it get less powerful? I mean, the average person can only follow so many Twitter posts at any given time. Perhaps I don’t fully understand. It’s not the first time.

By no means am I criticizing Twitter nor those who tweet – they are making the most of the medium. I would like to try it too. In my mind, however, I see a list of entries such as this:

- Getting ready to draw.

- Drew.

- Going to work.

- Worked.

Does the above interest anyone? If so, maybe I should get on the Twitter bandwagon. If not, maybe I should leave the tweeting to the big birds.

Being local is going global

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

I’ve been getting more and more excited about local economies. Just yesterday a couple of local artists/web designers were discussing the subject.

To put this in perspective, these local artists/web designers live in Las Cruces, NM – a beautiful town of modest size and growing. At first glance, one might think there is not much opportunity in such a locale. But, the more we discussed it, the more excited we got about projects utilizing local talent. Also we had to admit that, just because we don’t know all the artists in this town, does not mean they aren’t out there.

We also discussed local economies in general. In Las Cruces, there are many folks who try to eat as locally as possible. I could go on and on about the absolutely wonderful food we have here and the top-rate Farmers Market, but one needs to visit to truly understand.

In any case, we talked about how, with the internet we can work with people all over the world but why? If there’s talent right down the street, why not work with that guy. It keeps money here and builds actual, physical network ties.

Books and resources about a movement toward local economies abound. And I think that’s a good thing. But I also think it’s great to be able to share things with people all over the world. We do live in a great day and age!

Turtle’s Cholesterol Count

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

There’s a turtle that lives in my backyard. I’ve been trying to get him to eat a healthier diet but he doesn’t care for it.

I’m not sure what turtles are supposed to eat but I know they eat bugs. I don’t really keep any bugs handy in the fridge so the turtle mostly eats what I eat. However, he doesn’t eat a lot of the veggies I give him. He’ll eat some, but usually he’ll eat the meat and cheese first and leave the veggies for last if at all.

He's a nice turtle, sometimes sociable when people come over.

This gets me worried. In my mind, he should be eating a well rounded diet. Instead, he likes cheese a lot and no lettuce. Will this raise his cholesterol? is that a problem among turtles? Does this matter at all?

I’ll do some research on it but I’m in no hurry. He seems happy and healthy. He usually will come to me if I call him. He did hiss at me once when I gave him only vegetables and no cheese. (I gave him cheese and he seemed to warm up).

Oldie but goodie

I placed Perk at Work in the Hot Seat at Webcomics.com and received a lot of great insight. It got me thinking about past renditions of this comic. Hopefully I can take what works and use it. In any case, strolling down memory lane gave me the idea to post one of these older ones. I think this is from Perk Version 3.0.

This current version of Perk at Work is actually the first to use have the characters in human form. Before that, all the characters were animals. Below is an older Perk at Work comic. Back then Perk didn’t work at the cafe but was a customer like the rest. Click on the comic to view it in a larger format. Enjoy!

Once, twice, three times a’weekly

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Starting next Monday, Perk at Work will post new comics three times a week. Why? Quality!

For some time now I have been working to break the characters away from behind the counter. Here are some examples from my archives:

Red Hot Dance Recipe

Sittin’ Pretty

Handout Harry

What If’s

Bunion Ache

I, personally, like the counter. I like sitting in a coffee shop or cafe that has a counter along a window. It’s fun to sit and watch humans. So I’ll keep the counter here and there.

But breaking the characters out is even more fun! The difficulty I have is a lack of time. So I figure by going to three days a week, the comic could have more depth and be more fun all around. And isn’t that what it’s all about anyways?

Hope you will enjoy the new strips!

Thanks for visiting!
