When I was in school, one of the professors talked about "fuzzy membership" in which, rather than being a member of a group or not (true or false, 0 or 1), membership was a real number from zero to one, inclusive. so that with one group, I attend an occasional meeting and read the website once in a while, but for another group, I attend every meeting, read the website every day (sometimes twice) and encourage others to join or remain members.

For the first group, perhaps I have 30% membership and for the second, 70 or 80% membership.

I was surprised to find that "hook up" did NOT refer to an arranged meeting, unless you spell it meating; that is an act of coitus.

A very similar thing happened to me way back in 7th grade (wow, more than 30 years ago!). I was a little dweeb who got picked on and made fun of quite a bit, and one day a "popular" girl who sat near me in one of my classes smirked at me and said, "I heard you asked Kim [Lastname] to go steady with you!" She clearly thought this was hilarious, and was trying to embarrass me. Thing was, I had *no idea* who Kim [Lastname] was.

I did eventually meet Kim, when a couple days later, yet another "popular" girl called my name and pointed to the girl next to her and said, "Here's Kim!" Kim turned out to be just about the prettiest girl I'd ever seen (seriously - even now, she still ranks among the prettiest girls I've ever met). I did end up getting to know her as an acquaintance, as we had a few classes together over the next couple years, and she was actually a very sweet girl. She was also always nice to me; she had more class than most of the popular crowd she ran with.

Never did find out how the rumor got started, though.
